Applicant(s):  Megan Bonebrake

Description:

Imagine a group of second graders designing and constructing the Great Wall of China, significant buildings and structures from ancient civilizations such as the Greeks, recreating the Oregon Trail, and the battles that occurred in wars like the War of 1812. Using LEGO bricks, baseplates, and accessories, my students will become young builders—planning, designing, and creating models that connect what they are learning in their reading curriculum.

This project allows students to explore the same skills that carpenters, structural engineers, and construction professionals use every day. As they work in small groups, they will measure, problem-solve, and collaborate to bring their structures to life. Building with LEGOs helps students understand how civilizations designed homes, temples, and cities, while also showing them how modern careers in construction science continue to shape the communities we live in today.

By incorporating LEGO building into our reading lessons, students will not only deepen their comprehension of history but also practice critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity. They will learn that every structure—whether from ancient times or modern cities—starts with an idea, a plan, and the teamwork to make it stand tall.

Most importantly, this project gives my students the chance to see themselves in future careers. Many of my students have never considered that they could become architects, engineers, or builders. With these hands-on experiences, they begin to realize that the curiosity and creativity they show in second grade can grow into real-world opportunities that impact their communities.

Your support will provide the LEGO kits, baseplates, and accessories that transform our classroom into a construction lab. With your help, my students can build the past while also imagining themselves as the future builders.

Let’s build a future where curiosity and construction go hand in hand—one brick at a time!
